Our mangers in order
|
Put them in order best first
Lyall Macari Bonds Redknapp Roeder Pardew Curbs Zola Grant Substantial Samuel
2 groups there for me and that bottom group is big and utter shit. 1) Lyall - 85-86 2) Bonds - legend and best win ratio 3) Curbs - nothing special but did ok 4) Redknapp - 5th in 98-99 was good 5) Pardew - FA Cup was good but not much else 6) Macari - thieving jock cunt, enough for a yes vote by himself 7) Zola - good football at times but shit management 8) BFS - pains me but he isn't the shittest IMHO 9) Roeder - had the decency to be genuinely ill when he left 10) Grant - never been so depressed by a manager in my life
Roeder gets special points for being our only permanent manager Wikipedia couldn't find anything to say about, good or bad. Cunt

The first manager during my time was Greenwood.
For me Greenwood slightly shades Lyall but those two definitely top two (both, rather ironically, had 'out' campaigns mounted against them, shame on those who joined in.)
Redknapp third.
Grant, Roeder and Zola definitely bottom three for me, all the others somewhere inbetween.
Billy Bonds tenure definitely improved once he went for Redknapp as his assistant, as he was quite dour and naive as a manager, but as we all know it ended badly.

One thing we should all be able to agree on is that Roeder was the worst manager we've ever had by a country mile. The team he managed had far too much talent to be even near the relegation places. Grant was awful, true, but his squad was nowhere near as capable as Roeder's.

Macro made some good signings altho they didn't do much as he left We were well of the pace and nowhere near a play off spot when he left 12th in div one which is about lowest we have ever been
Mint sure I can see any case for him being too 5 on some lists?

Greenwood because of his vision and the fact he won a European Cup in his maiden year playing in Europe. Lyall almost emulated Ron but two F A Cup wins in 5 years and a Cup winners cup final and almost winning the league puts him alongside Ron. Redknapp got us into Europe and also gave us some great moments. Pardew F A cup final appearance. Allardyce? The rest not worth a mention.
Billy Bonds always will be a legend. Got stabbed in the back, dont think he really liked management. Boogers and Beauchamp both left him somewhat exasperated. Will forever love Billy Bonds for being completely West Ham. He was different class.

Greenwood guided West Ham United to its greatest moment: winning the European Cup Winners' Cup... So, he's No.1... That was a huge honour back then...
Lyall came close in '76 but two FA Cup wins doesn't quite match-up to major European success...

You can't put MR.ALLARDYCE into that list until he's time is up, that way you know how well he's done.

I just love the 'Lyall at the top' crowd. How many times did he get us relegated? He also sold a top team and turned it into relegation fodder.

I only know it from Lyall onwards, so this is my take:
Lyall - a good manager and a gentlemen. Should have been given time to rebuild. It was the end of an era when he left.
Macari - his style wasn't suited to us. Made some good dignings though.
Bonds - a legend, but pushed into management too soon due to events.
Redknapp - our best manager since Lyall, had us playing some decent football, bought some great players, established us as a PL side. On the downside - a crook and a wanker. Went downhill when we sold Rio and replaced him with shit.
Roeder - completely out of his depth.
Pardew - had a difficult start, but seemed to turn it around and gave us the best season since 85-86. Went unbelievably wrong.
Curbishley - boring, spent money badly. Ironically, when we ran out of cash he was the ideal man to steady the ship and keep us up for a few years.
Zola - a novice, but didn't do that badly. Hampered by having to sell players and bring in cheap replacements and loans. A yes man and lap dog for Duxbury.
Grant - awful, awful manager.
Allardyce - got us up, kept us up. Had us playing awful football. Definitely not the worse, but makes you lose the will to live and not care about football any more.

So despite the massive cuntings off that BFS gets from all quarters, me included, he is nobody's worst ever manager.

We have played some utter crap under all of them. But when Greenwood and Lyall got it right the football was a thing of real beauty. Greenwood's European Cup Winners Cup Final, the birth of total football; Lyall and the European games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Den Hague; pure flowing football with absolute passion and commitment to the cause.

Strange but think pardew must be higher, Wembley appearances and a feel good argie factor, must influence my thinking, strange how Hayden Mullins kept mascherano out of the starting 11
